Steve Beier took over for Dr. Kent Fishel as the executive director of Discipleship Inc on January 1, 2022. His desire is to impact the lives of young adults for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. By engaging them through the Truth of God's Word Steve is able to "shine the Light" of the Son of God in the dark world around us.
Dr. Kent Fishel started Discipleship Inc over 40 years ago. He built a youth ministry to impact the lives of young people. His passion for the Lord was evident in all that Kent said and did. He passed away on January 22, 2024.
Closing words from Dr. Fishel
To my faithful supporters
"My prayers for you will continue and hope that you renew your support to Discipleship, Inc. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians; “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints” (Colossians 1:3-4).
Be Blessed,
Dr. Kent M. Fishel
Today high school and college students are being assaulted with the lies of our culture now more than ever. Truth is no longer the solid ground upon which morality and religion are grounded. Instead, relativism, emotionalism, and indoctrination fill the air of which they breathe.
Recent studies show that coaches and teachers are among the top 3 ‘influencers’ in our kids' lives. They are able to come alongside young adults and become role models for them. They can show them the destructiveness of sin and the emptiness of immorality that so plagues our nation.
Discipleship Inc is a Christian ministry founded on Biblical Truth. We declare the supremacy of Jesus Christ over all things in this world and hold fast to His commands. By establishing and building relationships we are able to declare the “Word of God” as the Rock upon which we build our lives.
The Apostle Paul declared in Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” It is this gospel that we preach and teach through Bible studies, mentoring relationships, and helping young adults to ‘call into question’ the false narrative of our culture.
Steve has written two books, “Maximum Impact—The Transforming Power of Virtue” and “More than a Game—Learning Life Skill from Tennis Skills.” It is these very principles that have separated him as a youth teacher and mentor.
The board at Discipleship Inc has endorsed Steve to take his unique Christ centered beliefs to the high school and college students of today. The aim of this ministry is that the high calling of Jesus would be the foundation of our youth, so that they, “do all things to the Glory of God.”
I am excited to be joining Discipleship Inc. After 37 years of teaching the game of tennis, I stepped down from my role as the head tennis pro at the Fort Wayne Country Club. The Lord Jesus Christ had been ‘tugging on my heart’ to go into full time Christian ministry.
On January 1, 2022, I took over as the executive director of Discipleship Inc for Dr. Kent Fishel. His failing health prevented him from continuing on in that role. Kent and I were friends through the game of tennis for over 25 years.
My job teaching tennis revolved around instructing middle school and high school students. As a teacher I learned to help these students think for themselves. Truth was critical to what we did. Reasoning clearly and accurately was the foundation for all that I taught on the tennis court.
Truth is the central claim of the Word of God. The creation of the world, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, and His atoning death on the cross are all truth claims. My passion for youth ministry is founded upon the reality that, “Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
I have been married for 30 years to my wife Ruth. We have 5 children ranging in ages from 18 to 29. May the Light of Jesus Christ shine through this ministry to impact the culture in which my children are also growing up in.
Here is a picture of my brother and I in Florida at the end of February. We have been making this trip together for over 15 years.
We had a great trip to the Rocky Mountains over the Fourth of July week. We were able to see my daughter that lives there and take in the Majestic Creation of our Lord Jesus Christ. As the Psalmist said, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork." (Psalm 19:1)
My bucket hat looked much more natural with mountains in the background.
Here is a picture from a recent match during team lineups. Many times in matches I am coaching against fellow tennis players. This was one of those times. What a blessing it is to reconnect with friends that I have not seen in many years.
My brother came to my church recently to hear me preach. He was greeted by his best friend from high school that drove in from North Carolina to see his parents. They had not seen each other in 25 years. What a blessing that day was!
Early morning coffee as we waited for the courts to dry at the Homestead Invitational in late April.
We had a very cold, and windy, Saturday morning match in early April. I had on 4 layers and my winter coat, and I was still cold!! What made me colder was watching some of the players playing in tank tops.
Over the past several months I have been working with the InterVarsity ministry on the campus of PFW here in Fort Wayne. What a blessing it has been to get to know many of these students. Here is a picture of some of them that attend an apologetics study that I lead on Wednesday afternoons.
